The tournament runs from June 11 to July 19, 2026. The opening match kicks off in Mexico City, while the grand final is played on July 19 at MetLife Stadium in New York/New Jersey. In between, fans get a record 104 matches — up from 64 in previous editions — thanks to the expanded 48-team format.

The group stage spans roughly June 11 to June 27, 2026. The 48 teams are split into 12 groups of four, with the top two from each group plus the eight best third-placed teams advancing to a new round of 32.

Knockout stage and the final

For the first time, the World Cup features a Round of 32. From there it is straight knockout football: Round of 16, quarter-finals, semi-finals, the third-place play-off, and the final. Every knockout tie that ends level after 90 minutes goes to extra time and, if needed, penalties.
