World Cup 2026 Groups Explained: All 12 Groups & How They Work

With 48 teams, the World Cup 2026 group stage looks different from anything before. Here's how the 12 groups work and what each team needs to advance.

12 groups of four teams

The 48 qualified nations are drawn into 12 groups of four (Groups A through L). Each team plays the other three in its group once, so every side plays three group games before the knockout rounds begin.

How teams qualify for the knockouts

The top two teams from each group advance automatically — that's 24 teams. They are joined by the eight best third-placed teams across all groups, making 32 teams for the new Round of 32.

How group standings are decided

Points work the usual way: three for a win, one for a draw, none for a defeat. If teams are level on points, the tiebreakers are applied in order:

  1. Goal difference across all group matches
  2. Goals scored
  3. Head-to-head points between the tied teams
  4. Head-to-head goal difference and goals scored
  5. Fair-play record, then a drawing of lots
