World Cup 2026 Format: How the 48-Team Tournament Works
The World Cup 2026 introduces the biggest format change in the tournament's history. Here's how the expanded 48-team competition is structured.
From 32 to 48 teams
For the first time, 48 nations compete at a single World Cup, up from 32. The expansion gives more countries — especially from Africa, Asia and the Americas — a chance to reach football's biggest stage.
104 matches in total
The bigger field means a bigger tournament: 104 matches compared with 64 previously. That's more football than ever, spread across 39 days and 16 cities.
The new Round of 32
With 32 teams reaching the knockouts, the tournament adds a brand-new Round of 32 before the familiar Round of 16, quarter-finals, semi-finals and final. The winner will play eight matches on the way to lifting the trophy.
Why the format matters for fans
- More matches every day during the group stage
- More nations and more underdog stories
- A longer, more dramatic road to the final
- Greater chance your country is involved
